Did You Know?

SOME FACTS ABOUT ANXIETY SURROUNDING EATING DISORDERS

Anorexia nervosa was first used as a term in 1873, although cases of those with an apparent loss of appetite were recorded in the seventeenth century.

Bulimia nervosa was first used as a term in 1979, although cases were documented hundreds of years ago.

The word “nervosa” shows that both anorexia and bulimia are anxiety related.

Our daughter has extreme emotions; she cries, gets angry, and easily falls into rages. Is this normal and how can we help her and our family cope?

More often than not, parents have never heard their son or daughter speak like this before, or heard them express such hatred towards themselves and towards their parents. Parents may not only be shocked, but also quite frightened by the force of these emotions. It’s important to stand firm and show that your love and support are solid. So do continue to offer a hug, even though you may be rejected. Try not to be frightened by the rages or let them overwhelm and defeat you. Although you will want to set some boundaries for extreme behaviour, let the anger go by and remember that the emotions are not directed against you personally, even though what your child may say or do can be very upsetting indeed.
